Autumn Nutrition Secrets: Support Your Lungs, Gut and Mind This Season
Autumn Nutrition
By Hannah Carr, Naturopathic Nutritionist
As the leaves begin to fall and the air turns crisp, our bodies also go through seasonal shifts. In this blog, I’ll share how you can use nutrition to support your health during Autumn, drawing on the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Common Health Challenges in Autumn
Many people notice certain health challenges becoming more pronounced at this time of year, such as:
-
Anxiety or low mood
-
Depression
-
Lung issues (coughs, chest tightness)
-
Lack of focus or concentration
-
Brain fog
Take a moment to reflect — do you notice that certain symptoms return for you each Autumn?
If so, you’re not alone.
In my 12-week program, The Exhausted to Energised Method, and within our membership community, The Holistic Health Circle, many women experience recurring health issues during this season. Recognising these patterns can be the first step toward healing — and that’s exactly what this blog is here to help you with.
️ The Autumn Connection in Traditional Chinese Medicine
According to TCM, Autumn corresponds to the lungs, colon, skin, and mind.
So if you notice health challenges in these areas during this time of year, it’s not a coincidence — your body is aligning with the season.
Supporting Your Body with Nutrition in Autumn
When we experience challenges with the gut, skin, lungs, or mind, it’s often a sign that our gut health needs some extra care. Supporting the gut is one of the most powerful ways to heal the body from the inside out.

The Best Foods for Autumn
TCM teaches that white foods are especially nourishing in Autumn — not processed foods like white bread or pasta, but natural, grounding foods such as:
-
Celeriac
-
Parsnips
-
Radishes
-
Cauliflower
-
Pears
Pair these with hydrating fruits like pears and apples, and warm spices such as cinnamon, star anise, turmeric, or pumpkin spice. These combinations support your lungs and help you stay healthy through the season.
While we often hear “eat the rainbow,” TCM suggests focusing on different colours throughout the year — not necessarily every day. In Autumn, that means emphasising white, earthy foods that nourish your lungs and immune system.
Are Your Lungs Asking for Attention?
In TCM, the emotion associated with the lungs is grief.
If you notice recurring respiratory symptoms each Autumn, take a moment to reflect:
Could you be holding onto unprocessed emotions or loss?
Ask yourself ‘How can I support myself this year to feel connected to my body and what is my version of healthy this season’?
Each year, your body offers another chance to release and heal. Supporting yourself through nutrition helps relieve physical stress, allowing your body (and mind) to let go. It’s a deeply restorative process.
Nutrition to Support the Mind
As daylight shortens, many of us feel our mood shift. If you’re noticing more anxiety, sadness, or low energy, you’re not alone — and there are nutritional ways to help.
We’ve created an Autumn Health Workshop, all about staying healthy in Autumn through seasonal and natural techniques. It covers the essentials like Vitamin D, Omega-3s, and other nutrients that help stabilise mood and reduce anxiety naturally.
It’s in our health portal The Holistic Health Circle
We also cover seasonal living tips on our podcast.
